PRIVACY POLICY
Browser Statistic Privacy Policy
Summary
- Browser Statistic records the websites shown in your active Chrome tab and the first website loaded in each new tab, including the full page address, page title and times, to show you statistics about your time online.
- All records and settings are stored only in Chrome’s extension storage on your device. The Extension does not send them to the Developer or to any other server, and it does not use Chrome Sync.
- The Developer operates no server, account system, analytics or advertising for the Extension, and does not sell or share your data.
- The Extension itself makes no network requests. Information leaves your device through the Extension only if you choose to open the Developer’s Ko-fi page or to send a feedback email from your own email application, and no browsing records are attached to either; Chrome’s own checks for extension updates are handled by Chrome, not by the Extension.
- Version 1.0.3 has no button for clearing or exporting records; removing the Extension at chrome://extensions deletes all of them, and the oldest records are deleted automatically once the record limits described in this Policy are reached.
- Because complete page addresses and page titles are stored, the records may include search terms, names, email addresses or other details that websites place in addresses or titles, and anyone who can use your Chrome profile can open the statistics page.
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy (the “Policy”) is issued by That Developer Steven (the “Developer”, “we”, “us” or “our”), an independent software developer based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It applies to the Browser Statistic extension for Google Chrome (the “Extension”). In this Policy, “you” and “your” refer to any person who installs or uses the Extension, and “Personal Data” means information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person.
The Extension measures how you spend time on websites in Google Chrome. It records the websites you view in the active tab, the first website loaded in each new tab and the first website after Chrome starts, and shows totals, charts and lists in its toolbar popup and statistics page.
This Policy explains what information the Extension handles, why it handles it, where the information is kept and the choices available to you. By installing or using the Extension, you acknowledge this Policy.
2. Scope of This Policy
This Policy applies to the Extension as distributed through the Chrome Web Store, version 1.0.3 and later versions until this Policy is updated.
The Extension records activity on every website that you open over http:// or https:// in Google Chrome. This Policy does not apply to those websites, to Google Chrome itself, to the Chrome Web Store, or to any third-party service that you reach through a link in the Extension, such as Ko-fi or your email provider. Each of them is governed by its own terms and privacy policy.
3. Information the Extension Processes
This Policy distinguishes between two kinds of handling. Processing on your device means that the Extension creates, reads or stores information inside Google Chrome on your own computer. Collection by the Developer means that information is transmitted to, and received by, the Developer. The Extension processes information about your browsing activity on your device in order to calculate your statistics. It does not transmit that information to the Developer or to anyone else, so the information is not collected by the Developer.
The table below lists each category of information that the Extension processes.
| Category | What it includes | Purpose | Where it is kept | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visit records | For each visit to a website in the active tab: the full page address (including any query string and fragment), domain, page title, start and end times, duration, the reason the visit ended (such as a tab switch, navigation, closing the tab, Chrome losing focus, the device becoming idle, locked or asleep, or a browser restart) and internal tab, window and session identifiers. | To calculate time spent on each website and show totals, top sites, charts, trends and recent visits. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Until you remove the Extension; only the latest 5,000 records are kept. |
| New-tab site-open records | The first website loaded in each newly opened tab, including tabs opened in the background, by a website or by the Extension’s Donate link, and possibly tabs that Chrome restores when it starts: full page address, domain, page title, time, internal identifiers and a label showing how it was detected. | To show Site Open Counts on the statistics page. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Until you remove the Extension; only the latest 5,000 records are kept. |
| First site after browser startup | For each Chrome start: the startup time and the time, full page address, domain, title and internal identifiers of the first recorded page. | To show the First Site After Startup list on the statistics page. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Until you remove the Extension; only the latest 500 records are kept. |
| Visit in progress | The address, domain, title, start time, latest one-minute check and internal identifiers of the visit being timed. | To keep timing accurate if Chrome restarts the Extension’s background process. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Overwritten continuously; it becomes a visit record when the visit ends. |
| Session information | A random identifier and start time for each Chrome session, whether its first site has been recorded, and the identifiers and creation times of new tabs that have not yet loaded a website. | To link records to a browser session and to detect the first website loaded in each new tab. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Replaced each time Chrome starts; new-tab entries are removed when used or closed, after 7 days, or beyond 1,000 entries. |
| Preferences | Your chosen interface language and the period selected on the statistics page (Today, This Week, This Month, This Year or All Records). | To display the Extension in your language and remember your chosen period. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Until you change them or remove the Extension. |
| Device activity state | Whether the device is active, idle or locked, whether a Chrome window has focus, and which Chrome window was last focused. | To decide when timing starts, pauses and resumes. | Read in memory only; not stored as such. | Not stored. Its effect is reflected in the end times and end reasons of visit records. |
| Feedback email (optional) | A message that your default email application or service prepares from a template, plus anything you write or attach and, if you send it, your email address and any name attached to your email account. | To let you report problems or suggestions and allow us to reply. | Not stored by the Extension. If you send it, it is held by your email provider and in the Developer’s mailbox, which is provided by Google (Gmail). | No fixed period. Kept only as long as reasonably needed to deal with your message and any follow-up, and deleted on request unless the law requires us to keep it. |
Please note the following details about the browsing records:
- Full page addresses. The Extension stores the complete address of each page, including any query string and fragment. Addresses can contain search terms, values submitted through some web forms or identifiers added by a website. The Extension does not read page content, but any information in a page address is stored on your device as part of the record. The statistics page mainly displays domains and page titles, but the full addresses remain in storage.
- Page titles. Page titles are set by websites and can include personal details, such as your name or email address in a webmail tab, the subject of a message or the name of a document. The Extension stores each title exactly as Chrome reports it.
- Activity timing. End times and end reasons show when the device became idle (no input for 60 seconds), was locked or appeared to sleep, when Chrome lost focus and when the browser restarted. For idleness, locking, sleep or a browser restart, the end time is set to the latest one-minute check, so it may be up to about one minute earlier than the event.
- Timing in windows that are not in focus. Timing is designed to follow the active tab of the focused Chrome window and to stop when all Chrome windows lose focus. However, version 1.0.3 does not check window focus when the active tab of a window changes or when the page in a window’s active tab navigates, reloads or finishes loading. As a result, time may be recorded for a page in a Chrome window that you are not using, including while you are using another application, and that timing may continue until the device becomes idle or locked or Chrome’s window focus changes again.
- Incognito windows. Chrome runs extensions in Incognito windows only if you turn on “Allow in Incognito”. The Extension does not distinguish Incognito tabs, so if you turn on that setting, Incognito pages may be recorded in the same storage on your device and remain after the window is closed.
- Pages that are not recorded. Chrome’s internal pages, extension pages, local files and other addresses that do not begin with http:// or https:// are ignored.
Apart from what is described above, the Extension does not collect or process the following:
- It has no account or sign-in and does not ask for your name, email address or other contact details. Such details are stored only where a website includes them in a page address or page title, and we receive your email address only if you send us a feedback email.
- It does not inject scripts into web pages and does not read, record or change their content, including text you type, messages or passwords, except where such information appears in a page address or page title.
- It does not access cookies, payment information, saved passwords, contacts, your location, your camera or your microphone.
- It does not use analytics, telemetry, advertising identifiers or third-party tracking tools, and it does not load code from outside the Extension.
4. How Information Is Used
Information processed by the Extension is used only to provide the Extension’s features to you on your device, namely to:
- measure the time spent on each website and calculate totals for today, for the selected period and for all records;
- count the websites opened in new tabs and record the first website after each Chrome start;
- show your usage figures, charts and lists in the toolbar popup and on the statistics page;
- pause and resume timing when Chrome loses or regains focus, or when the device becomes idle, locked or asleep; and
- remember your interface language and selected statistics period.
The Developer does not use this information for profiling, advertising or marketing, does not sell it, and does not use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes. Because the information never reaches the Developer, no person acting for the Developer can view your browsing records.
If you send us a feedback email, we use its contents only to read and respond to your message and to improve the Extension.
5. Where Information Is Stored and How It Is Protected
All records and settings described in this Policy are stored in Chrome’s extension storage on your device, which is the private storage area (chrome.storage.local) that Chrome provides to each extension. The Extension does not use chrome.storage.sync, so its data is not synchronized through Chrome Sync or your Google Account. It does not store data in website cookies or website storage.
The Developer does not operate any server, database, cloud service or account system for the Extension, and the Extension contains no code that sends information over the network. Websites and other extensions have no means of reading the records through the Extension: it injects no scripts into web pages, accepts no messages from websites or other extensions, and makes its records available only to its own popup and statistics page.
The Extension does not encrypt the records itself. They are kept in your Chrome profile on your device and rely on the security of Google Chrome, your device and your account on it. Anyone who can use your browser profile can open the statistics page and see your usage figures, domains, page titles and visit times, can view the complete stored records, including full page addresses, with Chrome’s developer tools, and a person or program with access to your device’s files may be able to read the stored records. We recommend that you use a screen lock, keep Chrome up to date and use a separate browser profile if you share your computer.
6. Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise share Personal Data.
Because the Extension does not transmit your browsing records, preferences or any other information to the Developer, we do not hold that information and cannot disclose it to any third party, including advertisers, data brokers, law enforcement or other authorities.
If you send us a feedback email, it is stored in the Developer’s mailbox, which is provided by Google (Gmail). We do not share its contents with any other third party, except where we are required to do so by applicable law.
The Extension does not use Chrome Sync, so no Extension data is shared with Google through synchronization.
7. Third-Party Websites and Services
The Extension does not send any information to the Developer or to any other server. Its code makes no network requests: it does not send requests to the websites you visit, does not reload pages, does not load remote scripts, images or fonts, and does not report usage. It learns the address and title of your tabs only through Chrome’s built-in interfaces.
Information may leave your device only in the following cases, each of which is either started by you or managed by Chrome:
- Ko-fi donation page. Selecting “Donate” in the popup, the support page or the feedback page opens the Developer’s Ko-fi page in a new tab. The link contains no information from the Extension; Ko-fi receives only what your browser normally sends when opening a website, and Ko-fi’s own terms and privacy policy apply.
- Feedback email. Selecting “Send Feedback by Email” on the feedback page opens your default email application or service with a new message addressed to ThatDeveloperSteven138@gmail.com. The message has the subject “Browser Statistic Feedback” and a template containing the Extension’s name and empty fields for your browser, the website concerned, a description, steps to reproduce and a screenshot. The Extension attaches no records and does not send the message; it is sent only if you choose to send it, and the email providers involved handle it under their own terms.
- Extension updates. Google Chrome checks the Chrome Web Store for updates to installed extensions and installs them. This process is managed by Chrome, not by the Extension’s code, and is governed by Google’s terms and the Google Privacy Policy.
Opening a third-party website or service is your choice. The Developer is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of those websites and services.
8. Browser Permissions
The Extension requests the following browser permissions. Chrome may show related warnings when you install the Extension.
| Permission | Why the Extension needs it |
|---|---|
| tabs | Lets the Extension read the address and title of your tabs to record the website in the active tab, the first website loaded in each new tab and the first website after Chrome starts. The Extension does not use it to read page content or to change, reload or close your tabs. |
| storage | Allows the Extension to save the records, session information and preferences described in this Policy in Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). |
| windows | Listed for the Extension’s use of Chrome’s window functions, which tell it when Chrome windows gain or lose focus and which window was last focused, so that timing can pause when Chrome loses focus and resume when it regains focus. The Extension does not use them to read page content or to open, move or close windows. |
| alarms | Runs a check once a minute to keep the timing of the current visit up to date and to close visits interrupted by sleep or suspension (a gap of more than two and a half minutes). |
| idle | Detects whether the device is active, idle (no input for 60 seconds) or locked, so that timing stops while you are away. The Extension reads only this state and does not record your keystrokes or mouse movements. |
| host access to all URLs (all_urls) | Declared for access to the address and title of pages on every website, which the “tabs” permission also provides. Chrome may describe it as the ability to read and change your data on all websites, but version 1.0.3 does not use it to inject scripts into, read or change any web page, or to make network requests. |
9. Data Retention and Deletion
The Extension keeps information on your device for the following periods:
- Visit, site-open and startup records: until you remove the Extension. The latest 5,000 visit records, 5,000 site-open records and 500 startup records are kept, and older records are deleted automatically. There is no time-based expiry.
- Visit in progress and session information: overwritten as you browse and replaced each time Chrome starts.
- Preferences: until you change them or remove the Extension.
- Feedback emails you send us: no fixed period. We keep them only as long as reasonably needed to deal with your message and any follow-up, and delete them on request unless the law requires us to keep them.
Version 1.0.3 does not include a button or setting for deleting individual records, clearing all records or exporting records. Removing the Extension is the only way it provides to delete what it has stored.
To delete all information stored by the Extension:
- Open chrome://extensions in Google Chrome.
- Find Browser Statistic and select Remove.
- Confirm the removal. Chrome deletes the Extension together with its extension storage on your device, including all visit records, site-open records, startup records, session information and preferences.
Turning the Extension off at chrome://extensions stops new recording but keeps existing records. Clearing your cache or browsing history in Chrome does not delete the Extension’s records, because they are kept in the Extension’s own storage.
If you have sent us a feedback email and would like it deleted, please contact us using the details in the Contact section.
10. Your Rights and Choices
You control the information that the Extension processes, because it is stored on your own device. You may view summaries of your records and your most recent visits on the statistics page, change the interface language and statistics period, turn off “Allow in Incognito” at chrome://extensions if you have turned it on, turn the Extension off to stop recording, or remove it at any time.
Depending on where you live, data protection laws may give you rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, objection and data portability in relation to your Personal Data. These laws include the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union and European Economic Area, the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, and the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) of Hong Kong. We do not sell or share Personal Data, as those terms are defined in the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.
Because the Developer does not hold the information processed by the Extension, you exercise these rights in your browser: the statistics page shows your usage summaries, domains, page titles and up to 40 recent visits, and you can delete the information as described in Data Retention and Deletion. Version 1.0.3 does not provide a function for exporting or editing records. You may nevertheless contact us with any request or question, including for access to, correction of or deletion of feedback emails you have sent us, and we will respond within a reasonable time. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
11. Children’s Privacy
The Extension is a general-audience tool and is not directed to children under the age of 13, or under the minimum age required in your country. We do not knowingly collect Personal Data from children. Because the Extension does not transmit information to the Developer, we do not receive such data through the Extension. If you believe that a child has sent us Personal Data, for example in a feedback email, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
The use of information received or processed by the Extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
In particular, information processed by the Extension is:
- used only to provide the single purpose described in the Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing, which is to show you statistics about the websites you visit, the time you spend on them, the websites opened in new tabs and the first website after Chrome starts;
- not transferred to any person or service, except as described in this Policy;
- not used for personalized advertising;
- not used to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes; and
- not read by the Developer or by any person acting for the Developer, because it is never transmitted to the Developer.
The Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing states that the developer has disclosed that it will not collect or use your data. The Developer does not receive, collect or use any information from the Extension. The Extension itself processes browsing information on your device to provide its features, as described in this Policy, and the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy requires such processing to be disclosed even when the information never leaves your device.
13. International Users
The Developer is based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Extension processes information locally on your device, wherever you are located, and does not transfer information to the Developer or to any other country. The Extension does not use Chrome Sync.
If you choose to send us a feedback email, the message is carried by the email providers involved, including Google (Gmail) as the Developer’s provider, and may be processed in countries other than your own under those providers’ terms. The message is then read by the Developer, who is based in Hong Kong.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy when the Extension changes, for example when features or permissions are added or removed, or when legal requirements change. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date of this Policy. Material changes will be highlighted on this page and, where appropriate, in the Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing or release notes.
Your continued use of the Extension after the effective date of an updated Policy means that you acknowledge the updated Policy. Earlier versions of this Policy are available on request.
15. Contact
