PRIVACY POLICY
Video Watch Time Statistic Pro Privacy Policy
Summary
- Video Watch Time Statistic Pro detects when HTML5 videos play on web pages and records how long they play, grouped by date, 30-minute time slot and website domain name, so that it can show you watch-time statistics.
- Statistics, settings and break reminder state are stored only in Chrome’s extension storage on your device; if you select Remind Me After This Video, the addresses of the current page and video are also kept there temporarily. The Extension makes no network requests, sends nothing to the Developer or to any other server, and does not use Chrome Sync.
- To provide its on-page mini display and break reminder, the Extension places small elements in every web page you open over http:// or https://. These can contain today’s total watch time and a domain name, and the website’s own scripts can technically read them, even when the mini display is turned off.
- The Developer operates no server, account system, analytics or advertising for the Extension, and does not sell or share your data.
- Reset Today clears today’s statistics, and removing the Extension at chrome://extensions deletes everything it has stored. Otherwise, statistics are kept with no automatic expiry.
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy (the “Policy”) is issued by That Developer Steven (the “Developer”, “we”, “us” or “our”), an independent software developer based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It applies to the Video Watch Time Statistic Pro extension for Google Chrome (the “Extension”). In this Policy, “you” and “your” refer to any person who installs or uses the Extension, and “Personal Data” means information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person.
The Extension detects HTML5 video playback on the websites you open in Google Chrome and records how long videos play. It shows the results in its toolbar popup, in an optional mini display on web pages and on a history page, and it offers an optional break reminder that pauses playback after a period of continuous viewing that you choose.
This Policy explains what information the Extension handles, why it handles it, where the information is kept and the choices available to you. By installing or using the Extension, you acknowledge this Policy.
2. Scope of This Policy
This Policy applies to the Extension as distributed through the Chrome Web Store, version 1.1.1 and later versions until this Policy is updated.
The Extension works on websites that you open over http:// or https:// and that play video with standard HTML5 video elements, such as YouTube, Netflix, Vimeo, Twitch, Bilibili, Disney+, Hulu and Prime Video. This Policy does not apply to those websites, to Google Chrome itself or to the Chrome Web Store. Each of them is governed by its own terms and privacy policy. The Extension contains no links to third-party services.
3. Information the Extension Processes
This Policy distinguishes between two kinds of handling. Processing on your device means that the Extension reads, calculates or stores information inside Google Chrome on your own computer. Collection by the Developer means that information is transmitted to, and received by, the Developer. The Extension processes information about your video viewing on your device in order to calculate your statistics. It does not transmit that information to the Developer or to anyone else, so the information is not collected by the Developer.
| Category | What it includes | Purpose | Where it is kept | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Watch-time statistics | For each day: total Playtime and Effective watch time, the same totals for each website domain name (hostname) on which a video played, and totals for each 30-minute time slot and domain; plus when recording started and was last updated. Full page addresses, page titles and video titles are not stored in the statistics. | To show today’s total, site shares, trend charts and history. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Kept with no automatic expiry until you use Reset Today (today only) or remove the Extension. |
| Session and reminder state | Timing checkpoints, whether a video is playing, the domain name of the last video played, running session totals, and the break reminder’s viewing streak and inactivity counters. | To keep timing accurate if Chrome restarts the Extension’s background process, and to run the break reminder. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Overwritten continuously; the last domain name stays until replaced, Reset Today or removal. |
| Deferred reminder target (only if you turn on the break reminder, which is off by default, and select Remind Me After This Video) | The address of the current page without any part after “#” (including its path and query string, which on many video websites identifies the specific video), and the address of the video’s media source together with its duration. | To postpone the break reminder until that video ends. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Temporary; cleared as described in Data Retention and Deletion. |
| Settings | Enabled and preferred metrics; mini display on or off, opacity, background color, position and size; break reminder on or off, its threshold (1 to 600 minutes) and the website whitelist domains you enter; and your interface language, which is English unless you choose another. | To apply your preferences. | Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). | Until you change them or remove the Extension. |
| Live playback state | For each tab and frame: tab and frame identifiers, domain name, whether a video is present, playing and visible, the number of playing videos, playback speed and the time of the latest update. The main frame of every web page you open reports its domain name when it loads, gains or loses focus, changes visibility, or is left or restored, even without a video. | To determine which website is playing video and whether it is visible, and to show live status. | Memory of the Extension’s background process only. | Discarded after 15 seconds without updates, when the tab closes or when Chrome stops the background process. |
| Page signals | Video state (paused, ended, loading state, playback speed, media source address, duration and on-screen size), page visibility, fullscreen state, the page’s domain, path and query string, and the time of your last click, tap or key press, without recording which key you pressed or what you typed (in Adjust mode only, the Escape key is recognized to end that mode). | To detect playback, to decide whether it counts as visible, to decide whether to show the mini display and to operate the break reminder. | Memory of the Extension’s script in the web page only. | Not stored, except the domain name in statistics and the deferred reminder target. |
| Information shown inside web pages | Today’s total watch time across all websites, the tracking state and a domain name, which may belong to a video playing in another tab; while the break reminder is shown, your viewing streak in minutes. | To show the mini display and break reminder. | Elements that the Extension inserts into the main frame of each web page you open (see Where Information Is Stored and How It Is Protected). | Only while the page is open; not stored by this mechanism. |
| Browser language | Your browser’s preferred languages. | To choose a language for the first screen before your saved settings load. | Memory only. | Not stored. |
Please note the following details:
- What counts as playback. Any HTML5 video that is playing counts, including muted, autoplaying, background, preview and advertisement videos. The domain names of websites that autoplay video may therefore be recorded even when you are not deliberately watching. When several tabs play video at once, the time is counted once and credited to one domain.
- Embedded players. A video inside an embedded frame is recorded under the domain name of that frame, such as the domain of an embedded video player, rather than the page that contains it.
- Metrics. Playtime counts whenever a video is playing. Effective watch time counts only while the video is playing and its tab is visible.
- Information Chrome provides. Because of the Extension’s website access, Chrome includes the full address and title of web pages opened over http:// or https:// in the tab and message information it passes to the Extension. The Extension uses only tab identifiers and domain names and does not store the rest; if an internal message is rejected or fails, the website’s origin may be written to the Extension’s developer console in Chrome on your device.
- Pages not covered. The Extension does not run on Chrome’s internal pages, the Chrome Web Store or local files, and it does not detect players that do not use a standard HTML5 video element or whose video element is inside a shadow DOM.
- Incognito windows. Chrome runs extensions in Incognito windows only if you turn on “Allow in Incognito”. The Extension does not distinguish Incognito tabs, so if you turn on that setting, watch time and domain names from Incognito tabs may be recorded in the same storage on your device and remain after the Incognito window is closed.
The Extension does not collect or process the following:
- It does not require or offer an account or sign-in, and it does not collect your name or email address.
- It does not keep a list of the pages you visit. Apart from the temporary deferred reminder target, it stores only the domain names of websites on which video played, with the date and 30-minute time slot.
- It does not read page text, form data, messages, passwords or the text you type, and it does not use or store page titles or video titles.
- It does not access cookies, website storage, payment information, contacts, your location, your camera or your microphone.
- It does not use analytics, telemetry, advertising identifiers or third-party tracking tools, and it does not load code from outside the Extension.
4. How Information Is Used
Information processed by the Extension is used only to provide the Extension’s features to you on your device, namely to:
- detect video playback and measure Playtime and Effective watch time;
- calculate daily, per-website and per-time-slot totals and show them in the toolbar popup, the mini display and the history page, and show the tracking status and the domain being tracked on the toolbar button;
- operate the optional break reminder, including pausing videos on the page and closing the tab if you select Close Now; and
- remember your settings.
The Developer does not use this information for profiling, advertising or marketing, does not sell it, and does not use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes. Because the information never reaches the Developer, no person acting for the Developer can view your statistics or settings.
5. Where Information Is Stored and How It Is Protected
The statistics, session and reminder state and settings described in this Policy are stored in Chrome’s extension storage on your device, which is the storage area (chrome.storage.local) that Chrome reserves for each extension in your browser profile. The Extension does not use chrome.storage.sync, so its data is not synchronized through Chrome Sync or your Google Account. It does not store data in website cookies or website storage.
The Developer operates no server, database, cloud service or account system for the Extension, and the Extension contains no code that sends information over the network. It runs only scripts packaged with it and does not accept messages from websites or other extensions.
Information placed inside web pages. In the main frame of every web page opened over http:// or https://, the Extension adds three elements: the mini display, its adjustment overlay and the break-reminder overlay. They are added even when the mini display is turned off, which only makes it invisible. The website’s own scripts can read these elements, which can contain today’s total watch time, the tracking state, a domain name (possibly of a video playing in another tab) and, while the reminder is shown, your viewing streak. Their fixed identifiers also let a website detect that the Extension is installed.
The Extension does not send this information anywhere, but a website could read it and handle it under its own practices, over which the Developer has no control. Similarly, while the break reminder is shown, a website’s scripts could technically activate its buttons, for example to close that website’s own tab or to record that page’s address as the deferred reminder target on your device. These points are based on our review of the Extension’s code. To prevent them on particular websites, limit the Extension’s site access in Chrome (at chrome://extensions, select Details and then Site access), which also stops watch-time recording on those websites, or turn off or remove the Extension.
The Extension does not encrypt its stored data. It is protected by the security of Google Chrome, your browser profile and your device, and anyone who can use your browser profile may be able to view it in the Extension. We recommend a screen lock, an up-to-date Chrome and a separate browser profile if you share your computer.
6. Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, trade or otherwise share Personal Data.
Because the Extension does not transmit your statistics, settings or any other information to the Developer, we do not hold that information and cannot disclose it to any third party, including advertisers, data brokers, law enforcement or other authorities.
The Extension does not use Chrome Sync, so no Extension data is shared with Google through synchronization. The Extension does not send the information shown in its on-page elements to any website. However, as explained in Where Information Is Stored and How It Is Protected, a website’s own scripts may be able to read it, and any use of it by that website is governed by the website’s own policies.
7. Third-Party Websites and Services
The Extension does not send any information to the Developer or to any other server. Its code makes no network requests: it does not send requests to the websites you visit (so it never uses your existing sessions with them), does not reload pages, does not load remote scripts, images or fonts, and does not report usage. It contains no donation, social media, feedback form or email links.
The Extension interacts with third parties only as follows:
- Websites you visit. The Extension’s scripts run inside web pages to read video and page state, insert the elements described in this Policy and, when the break reminder appears, pause playing videos in the main page (not in embedded frames), resuming them if you select Continue Watching or Remind Me After This Video. If you select Close Now, Chrome closes that tab. Websites are governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
- Extension updates. Google Chrome checks the Chrome Web Store for updates to installed extensions and installs them. This process is managed by Chrome, not by the Extension’s code, and is governed by Google’s terms and the Google Privacy Policy.
The Developer is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of the websites you visit.
8. Browser Permissions
The Extension requests the following browser permissions and uses the following Chrome functions. Chrome may show related warnings when you install the Extension.
| Permission | Why the Extension needs it |
|---|---|
| storage | Allows the Extension to save the statistics, session and reminder state and settings described in this Policy in Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local), and lets its scripts in web pages read your settings. |
| host access to http://*/* and https://*/* | Allows the Extension to run its scripts on, and exchange messages with, web pages opened over http:// or https://. Chrome may describe this as the ability to read and change your data on all websites. The Extension uses only tab identifiers and domain names from the tab information Chrome provides. |
| content scripts on http://*/* and https://*/* (all frames, after each page loads) | Detect whether HTML5 videos are playing and visible in each page and embedded frame. In the main page only, they insert the mini display and break-reminder elements and pause playing videos when a break reminder appears. |
| Tab functions (no separate permission is requested) | Find the active tab so that the popup can preview display settings or start Adjust mode, ask a page to update its mini display, close the tab when you select Close Now, and clear temporary state when a tab closes. Only tab identifiers are used. |
| Toolbar button and history page (no separate permission is requested) | Show a play symbol on the toolbar button while a video plays, with a tooltip naming the domain being tracked, and open the history page in a tab. |
9. Data Retention and Deletion
The Extension keeps information on your device for the following periods:
- Watch-time statistics: no automatic expiry; until Reset Today (today only) or removal.
- Session and reminder state: overwritten as you watch; the last domain recorded stays until replaced, Reset Today or removal.
- Deferred reminder target: cleared when you later select Continue Watching or Close Now, when a new Remind Me After This Video choice replaces it, at the next reminder check after 5 or more minutes without visible playback on a website outside your whitelist, when you turn the break reminder off, or on Reset Today. Moving to another video or page does not by itself clear it.
- Settings: until you change them or remove the Extension.
- Live playback state, page signals and browser language: held only in memory and not stored.
- Information shown inside web pages: present only while the page is open.
Version 1.1.1 has no button for deleting earlier days or all statistics, and no export feature. Removing the Extension is the way to delete everything it has stored.
To clear today’s record, open the Extension’s popup, select Reset Today and confirm. This clears today’s statistics, the session totals, the last domain recorded and the reminder state, including any deferred reminder target. Earlier dates are not affected.
To delete all information stored by the Extension:
- Open chrome://extensions in Google Chrome.
- Find Video Watch Time Statistic Pro and select Remove.
- Confirm the removal. Chrome deletes the Extension together with its local storage, including all statistics, session and reminder state and settings.
Turning the Extension off stops new recording but keeps existing data. Clearing your browsing history in Chrome may not delete the Extension’s data, because it is kept in the Extension’s own storage.
10. Your Rights and Choices
You control the information that the Extension processes, because it is stored on your own device. You may view your statistics, turn metrics, the mini display or the break reminder on or off, edit the website whitelist, change the interface language, limit the Extension’s site access in Chrome, turn off “Allow in Incognito” at chrome://extensions if you have turned it on, or turn off or remove the Extension at any time.
Depending on where you live, data protection laws may give you rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, objection and data portability in relation to your Personal Data. These laws include the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union and European Economic Area, the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, and the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) of Hong Kong.
Because the Developer does not hold the information processed by the Extension, you exercise these rights by managing the information in your browser: you can view it in the Extension and delete it as described in Data Retention and Deletion. You may nevertheless contact us with any request or question, and we will respond within a reasonable time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
11. Children’s Privacy
The Extension is a general-audience tool and is not directed to children under the age of 13, or under the minimum age required in your country. We do not knowingly collect Personal Data from children. Because the Extension does not transmit information to the Developer, we do not receive such data through the Extension. If you have any concern about a child’s use of the Extension, please contact us.
12. Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
The use of information received or processed by the Extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
In particular, information processed by the Extension is:
- used only to provide the Extension’s single purpose, which is to measure and report how long videos play in your browser (as described in its Chrome Web Store listing), and the optional break reminder that relies on that measurement;
- not transferred to any person or service, except as described in this Policy;
- not used for personalized advertising;
- not used to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes; and
- not read by any human, because it is never transmitted to the Developer.
The Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing states: “The developer has disclosed that it will not collect or use your data.” This is consistent with this Policy: the Developer does not receive, collect or use any information from the Extension. The Extension itself processes web browsing information on your device, namely the domain names of websites on which video played, when it played and, temporarily, the addresses of the page and video for which you select Remind Me After This Video, only to provide the features described in this Policy. Some of this information is shown inside web pages, as explained in Where Information Is Stored and How It Is Protected.
13. International Users
The Developer is based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Extension processes information locally on your device, wherever you are located, and does not transfer information to the Developer or to any other country. The Extension does not use Chrome Sync, so no cross-border transfer takes place through the Extension.
If you choose to email us, your message is carried by the email providers involved and may be processed in countries other than your own, including Hong Kong, under those providers’ terms.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy when the Extension changes, for example when features or permissions are added or removed, or when legal requirements change. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date of this Policy. Material changes will be highlighted on this page and, where appropriate, in the Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing or release notes.
Your continued use of the Extension after the effective date of an updated Policy means that you acknowledge the updated Policy. Earlier versions of this Policy are available on request.
15. Contact
