QuoteSpark Privacy Policy

Effective date
Last updated
Applies to
QuoteSpark version 1.1.3 and later

Summary

  • The Extension replaces Chrome’s New Tab page with a page that shows a randomly chosen inspirational quote from a collection packaged inside the Extension. A toolbar popup lets you choose the display language and load a new quote.
  • The Extension saves only two items in Chrome’s extension storage on your device: the language you choose and a count of how many times each packaged quote has been shown, which is used to show repeated quotes less often. Neither item is synchronized through Chrome Sync.
  • The Extension makes no automatic network requests and sends nothing to the Developer. There are no accounts, analytics, advertising or tracking, and no data is sold.
  • Information leaves your device only when you choose. Clicking the author’s name searches for that name with your default search engine (or, in some cases, Google Search), and clicking the Ko-fi icon opens the Developer’s Ko-fi page. Those services apply their own privacy policies.
  • You can change the language at any time in the popup. Removing the Extension at chrome://extensions deletes its stored data; the Extension has no separate reset button.

1. Introduction

That Developer Steven (the “Developer”, “we”, “us” or “our”), an independent software developer based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, publishes the QuoteSpark extension for Google Chrome (the “Extension”). This privacy policy (the “Policy”) applies to the Extension.

The Extension replaces Chrome’s New Tab page with a black page that shows a randomly selected inspirational quote and its author, chosen from more than 1,000 quotes packaged with the Extension and available in 10 languages. A toolbar popup lets you choose the display language and load a new quote in open QuoteSpark tabs. Clicking the author’s name searches the web for that author.

This Policy explains what information the Extension handles, why it handles it, where that information is kept and the choices available to you. In this Policy, “Personal Data” means information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person. The Extension is an independent product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Google. By installing or using the Extension, you acknowledge this Policy.

2. Scope of This Policy

This Policy applies to the Extension as distributed through the Chrome Web Store, version 1.1.3 and later versions until this Policy is updated.

The Extension does not run on any website. It operates only on its own pages inside Chrome: the replacement New Tab page and the toolbar popup.

This Policy does not apply to the search engine you use, including Google Search, to Ko-fi, to Google Chrome itself, to the Chrome Web Store or to any other third-party service you reach through a link in the Extension. Those services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies.

3. Information the Extension Processes

Processing on your device means that the Extension reads or keeps information inside your own Chrome browser so that its features work. Collection by the Developer means that information is sent to, and received by, the Developer. The Extension processes a small amount of information on your device, as set out below. The Developer does not collect any information through the Extension: the Extension sends nothing to the Developer, and the Developer operates no server for it. Information leaves your device only when you choose to use the author link or the Ko-fi icon.

Information processed by the Extension
CategoryWhat it includesPurposeWhere it is keptRetention
Language preferenceThe display language you select in the popup, saved as a short language code such as “en” or “zh” under the name “preferredLanguage”. Until you choose a language, English is used.To show quotes, author names and labels in your chosen language, and to update open QuoteSpark tabs immediately when you change it.Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). It is not synchronized.Until you choose another language or remove the Extension. There is no automatic expiry.
Quote display countsA list, saved under the name “quoteExposureCounts”, that records, for each packaged quote that has been shown, its identifier and the number of times it has been shown. A count increases each time a QuoteSpark New Tab page opens or is reloaded and, for each open QuoteSpark tab, each time you press the popup’s refresh button, so the combined total roughly reflects how many QuoteSpark New Tab pages you have opened and refreshed. It contains no web addresses, dates, times, browsing history or personal identifiers.To make quotes that have already been shown appear less often.Chrome’s extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). It is not synchronized.Until you remove the Extension. There is no automatic expiry.
Current quote and internal refresh messageThe quote currently shown and the active language. When you press the refresh button, the popup sends open QuoteSpark tabs an internal message that contains only the instruction to refresh.To display the quote and load a new one on request.Temporarily in memory within the Extension’s own pages. The internal message stays inside the Extension.Discarded when the tab or popup closes.
Author searchThe name of the author of the quote shown, in the selected language, taken from the Extension’s packaged collection rather than typed by you. When the search goes to Google directly, the selected language code is also included (see “Third-Party Websites and Services”).To search the web for the author when you click the author’s name.Not stored by the Extension. Sent to your default search engine, or to Google, only when you activate the author link.Not retained by the Extension. The search provider’s own privacy policy applies.
Ko-fi linkThe fixed web address of the Developer’s Ko-fi page. The Extension adds no information about you to it.To open the Ko-fi page when you click the Ko-fi icon.Not kept by the Extension.Determined by Ko-fi under its own policies.
Fallback page storageThe same two items, saved in the web storage (localStorage) of the page itself, but only if Chrome’s extension storage is unavailable, for example if the Extension’s page file is opened directly rather than as part of the installed Extension. This does not happen in normal use of the installed Extension, and no website’s storage is ever used.To keep the page working when extension storage is unavailable.The page’s own local web storage on your device.Until the browser’s site data for that page is cleared.

The Extension has no access to the websites you visit. It has no content scripts or website permissions, so it does not read web pages or insert elements, markers or overlays into them.

The Extension does not collect, store or transmit:

  • account or sign-in information: the Extension has no account or registration of its own and does not access your Google Account;
  • names, email addresses, telephone numbers or other contact details;
  • passwords, cookies, session tokens or other credentials: the Extension does not read or set cookies;
  • payment information: any donation you choose to make is processed on Ko-fi’s website by Ko-fi and its payment providers, not by the Extension;
  • location data;
  • your browsing history, the content of web pages, the tabs you have open, or searches you type yourself;
  • the language settings of your browser or operating system;
  • analytics, telemetry, crash reports, advertising identifiers or any other tracking data.

4. How Information Is Used

Information processed by the Extension is used only to provide the Extension’s features to you, namely:

  • to show a randomly selected quote and its author on the New Tab page in your chosen language;
  • to remember your chosen language and apply it to the popup and to open QuoteSpark tabs;
  • to use the quote display counts to show quotes that have already appeared less often;
  • to load a new quote in open QuoteSpark tabs when you press the refresh button;
  • to search for the author when you click the author’s name;
  • to open the Developer’s Ko-fi page when you click the Ko-fi icon.

The quote display counts are used only to weight the random choice of quotes and are never analyzed or reported. The Extension does not use any information for profiling, advertising, marketing or analytics. We do not sell information, and it is not used to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes. The Developer does not read, review or have access to the information the Extension processes, because that information never reaches the Developer.

5. Where Information Is Stored and How It Is Protected

The Extension saves only the language preference and the quote display counts, in chrome.storage.local, which is Chrome’s extension storage in your browser profile on your device. The Extension does not use chrome.storage.sync, so these items are not synchronized through Chrome Sync and the Extension does not send them to Google or anyone else.

The Developer does not operate any server, database or account system for the Extension, and the Extension does not send information to the Developer.

The Extension is designed to minimize the information it handles. It requests only the “storage” and “search” permissions, runs only code packaged with it and makes no automatic network requests. Websites cannot read this storage, and the Extension does not add encryption of its own. Anyone with access to your Chrome profile could view the stored items, for example with Chrome’s developer tools. No method of storage is completely secure, so please protect your device, operating-system account and Chrome profile, for example by using a screen lock and keeping Chrome up to date.

6. Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, rent, trade or share Personal Data. Because the Developer does not receive any information from the Extension, we have no such information to disclose to third parties, including advertisers, data brokers or public authorities.

Information leaves your device only when you activate the author link, which sends the author’s name to your search engine or to Google, or click the Ko-fi icon, which opens the Developer’s Ko-fi page (see “Third-Party Websites and Services”). Your browser contacts that service directly; the Developer does not receive these requests.

If you email us, we use your message only to respond to you. Any information about you that Ko-fi makes available to us because you chose to support us there is used only in connection with that support. We do not sell or share either, except where we are required to disclose it by applicable law. The Developer’s email address is a Gmail address, so your message is also processed by Google under the Google Privacy Policy, and by your own email provider under its policies.

7. Third-Party Websites and Services

The Extension does not send any information to the Developer. It makes no automatic network requests and loads no remote scripts, stylesheets, fonts or images: all quotes, author names, icons and styles are packaged with it. It causes a web request only when you use one of the links described below.

Author search with your default search engine. When you click the author’s name below a quote, or press Enter while it has keyboard focus, the Extension asks Chrome to search for that name, and only that name, with the default search engine set in your Chrome settings. The results open in the same tab.

Google Search. If Chrome’s search function is unavailable or reports an error, the Extension instead opens https://www.google.com/search in the same tab, with the author’s name and the selected language code (for example “en”) in the address. The same Google address is the target of the author link, so if you open the author’s name in a new tab or window, for example with a middle-click or the right-click menu, Google receives the author’s name and the language code. The Extension sends nothing when you merely hover over the link or copy its address; browser features such as page preloading are controlled by Chrome’s own settings, not by the Extension.

In each case, the search provider receives the search together with the ordinary information your browser sends with any web visit, such as your IP address, browser details and any cookies you already have for that site. It processes this information, and may keep the search in any search history it holds for you, under its own terms and privacy policy; for Google, see the Google Privacy Policy. As with any page you visit, Chrome may record the results page in your browsing history. The Extension adds nothing to these requests other than the author’s name and, for Google, the language code; any other request details are determined by Chrome, not by the Extension.

Ko-fi. The Ko-fi icon in the bottom-right corner of the New Tab page opens the Developer’s Ko-fi page at https://ko-fi.com/developersteven only when you click it, in the same tab unless you choose to open the link in a new tab or window. The icon is packaged with the Extension, so displaying it does not contact Ko-fi, and the Extension adds no information about you to the address. Ko-fi receives the ordinary information that accompanies any web visit. Ko-fi and its payment providers process that information, and anything you choose to provide there (such as payment details or a donation message), under their own terms and privacy policies. Information you choose to share on Ko-fi may be visible to the Developer as the operator of the Ko-fi page.

Chrome Web Store. Installation and automatic updates of the Extension are delivered by Google through the Chrome Web Store under Google’s own terms and policies. The Developer does not control this process.

The Extension contains no other external links.

8. Browser Permissions

The Extension requests only the browser permissions needed for its features. According to Chrome’s permissions documentation, neither the “storage” nor the “search” permission causes Chrome to display a permission warning when you install the Extension, so both are described here for transparency.

Permissions and browser settings used by the Extension
PermissionWhy the Extension needs it
storageTo save and read your language preference and the quote display counts in chrome.storage.local, and to let open QuoteSpark tabs notice when you change the language. The Extension does not use chrome.storage.sync.
searchTo search for the displayed author’s name with your default search engine, in the current tab, when you click the author’s name. The Extension uses it only at that moment and cannot read your search results or any other searches.
New Tab page override (chrome_url_overrides newtab, a manifest setting rather than a permission)To replace Chrome’s New Tab page with the Extension’s quote page. That page is part of the Extension and runs entirely in your browser.
Toolbar popup (action default_popup, a manifest setting rather than a permission)To provide the popup with the language selector and the refresh button.

The Extension has no host permissions and no content scripts, so it has no access to any website. It does not request permissions such as “tabs”, “history”, “cookies”, “scripting”, “identity” or “webRequest”.

9. Data Retention and Deletion

Information is kept only for the periods described below:

  • Language preference: kept until you choose another language or remove the Extension.
  • Quote display counts: kept until you remove the Extension, with no automatic expiry. The list holds at most one entry for each quote that has been shown.
  • Current quote: discarded when the tab or popup closes.
  • Author searches and Ko-fi visits: not retained by the Extension.
  • Fallback page storage: kept until the browser’s site data for that page is cleared.
  • Emails you send us: no fixed period. We keep them only as long as reasonably needed to deal with your message and any follow-up, and delete them on request unless the law requires us to keep them.

Earlier published versions of the Extension stored only these same two items in Chrome’s extension storage on your device and did not use Chrome Sync, so updating the Extension leaves no other stored data behind.

To change or delete the information the Extension stores:

  1. To change your language preference, open the Extension’s popup and select another language. The new choice replaces the previous one.
  2. The Extension has no reset or delete button. To delete all information it stores, go to chrome://extensions, find QuoteSpark and select Remove. Chrome’s documentation states that an extension’s locally stored data is cleared when the extension is removed. Turning the Extension off without removing it keeps the stored items. Removing the Extension also stops it from replacing Chrome’s New Tab page.
  3. If you are an advanced user, you can inspect or delete the stored items with Chrome’s developer tools while a QuoteSpark page is open. Deleting the quote display counts only resets the quote rotation.
  4. To delete records of searches or visits held by your search provider, by Ko-fi or in Chrome’s browsing history, use the controls those services and Chrome provide. The Extension cannot do this for you.
  5. To ask us to delete an email you sent us, write to ThatDeveloperSteven138@gmail.com.

10. Your Rights and Choices

You control the information the Extension handles directly on your device. You may change the language, decide whether to use the author link or the Ko-fi icon, change your default search engine in Chrome’s settings, turn the Extension off at chrome://extensions, or remove the Extension at any time.

Depending on where you live, data protection laws may give you rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction of processing, objection and data portability in relation to your Personal Data. These laws include the General Data Protection Regulation as it applies in the European Union and the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, and the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (Cap. 486) of Hong Kong. We do not sell or share personal information, as those terms are defined in the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

Because the Developer does not hold any information from the Extension, these rights are exercised by managing the data in your browser, as described in “Data Retention and Deletion”. If you have emailed us, you may ask us to access, correct or delete that correspondence. Information about a donation made on Ko-fi is held by Ko-fi under its own policies, and you may also contact us about any supporter information that Ko-fi makes available to us. You may also contact us at ThatDeveloperSteven138@gmail.com with any request or question, and we will respond within a reasonable time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority, such as the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data in Hong Kong.

11. Children’s Privacy

The Extension is a general-audience tool and is not directed to children under 13, or under the minimum age required in your country. We do not knowingly collect Personal Data from children. Because the Extension does not transmit information to the Developer, no such data is received. If you have concerns about a child’s use of the Extension, please contact us at ThatDeveloperSteven138@gmail.com.

12. Chrome Web Store User Data Policy

The use of information received or processed by the Extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

In particular, information processed by the Extension:

  • is used only to provide or improve the single purpose described in the Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing, which is showing inspirational quotes on Chrome’s New Tab page;
  • is not transferred to anyone, except that the author’s name (and, for a search sent directly to Google, the selected language code) is sent to your search engine or to Google when you activate the author link, and your browser opens Ko-fi when you click the Ko-fi icon, as described in this Policy;
  • is not used or transferred for personalized advertising;
  • is not used or transferred to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes;
  • is not read by any person, because it is never transmitted to the Developer.

The Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing states that the developer has disclosed that it will not collect or use your data. This is consistent with this Policy: the processing described above takes place only on your device to provide the Extension’s features, and none of it is collected by the Developer. An author search or a visit to Ko-fi is a navigation you start, sent by your browser directly to that service, and does not give the Developer access to any information processed by the Extension.

13. International Users

The Developer is based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Extension processes information locally on your device, wherever you are located, and the Extension transfers no information to the Developer in Hong Kong or elsewhere. The Extension does not use Chrome Sync and makes no cross-border transfers of its own. If you choose to search for an author or visit Ko-fi, the search provider or Ko-fi may process your request in other countries under its own policies. If you email us, your message is delivered through your email provider and Google’s Gmail service, which may process it in other countries, and is received by the Developer in Hong Kong.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy when the Extension, its features or applicable law change. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date of this Policy. Material changes will be highlighted on this page and, where appropriate, in the Extension’s Chrome Web Store listing or release notes. Your continued use of the Extension after the effective date of an updated Policy means that you acknowledge the updated Policy. Earlier versions of this Policy are available on request.

15. Contact

If you have any questions, requests or concerns about this Policy or the Extension, please contact us:

We aim to reply within 30 days. If you contact us by email, we receive your email address and the contents of your message and use them only to respond to you.
